ERA Seminar on Artificial Intelligence and ‘smart’ Criminal Justice Systems in Lisbon
Last week, I was in the fantastic city of Lisbon to present in a two-day seminar on AI and ‘smart’ Criminal Justice Systems jointly organized by the Academy of European Law (ERA) and Centro de Estudos Judiciarios (CEJ) under the coordination of Laviero Buono. My presentation dealt with the use of AI to counter organized crime where I discussed examples and cases of recent crimes and trends committed and assisted through AI by organized crime. During my intervention, I briefly talked about EL PACCTO’s Study on Artificial Intelligence and Organized Crime released in Costa Rica in December 2024, as well as the path towards a new Model Law on Artificial Intelligence and Crime to be developed within the framework of EL PACCTO 2.0 activities during 2025.
The conference was attended by 60 in presence participants and 20 participants online from many different countries outside Europe and featured 15 different speakers who were all present in Lisbon. The seminar was a very good opportunity to interact with many European law practitioners from public and private sector and it was an excellent occasion to reconnect with old friends and colleagues from ERA, meet new practitioners and academics emerging in this field and hear about their research and positions in this area.
Looking forward to further collaboration with ERA during this year and 2026.
